Public MTProxy Risks: What Free Proxies Hide

A complete breakdown of the risks of using public MTProxies: spam channels, metadata interception, instability, and legal risks. When you need your own proxy.

Public MTProxy Risks: What Free Proxies Hide

There are thousands of free MTProxy servers on the internet. They are easy to find in Telegram channels, on websites, and in social networks. The appeal is obvious: no need to pay or install anything — just click a link and connect. But "free" never means "without a cost".

What Happens When You Connect to a Public Proxy

When you connect to an MTProxy server, all your Telegram traffic goes through that server. The server operator sees:

It is important to understand: the operator cannot read the contents of your messages — MTProto encrypts data at the application layer. But the connection metadata is exposed.

Risk 1: Promoted Channels and Spam

This is the most common and legally permissible "risk". Every MTProxy has an optional TAG parameter — a Promoted Channel identifier. The channel with this tag is automatically pinned to the top of the chat list for all connected users.

Technically, this is Telegram's official monetization mechanism. Problems arise when:

  • The channel is spam or crypto schemes
  • The operator regularly changes the channel (you never know what will be pinned tomorrow)
  • Multiple channels are promoted simultaneously through rotation

Telegram does not limit the frequency of changing the TAG in the config. An operator can change the promoted channel even every hour.

Risk 2: Metadata Interception

MTProxy cannot read your messages, but it collects connection metadata:

What the operator seesWhat it means
Your IP addressYour physical location (down to city/provider)
Connection timeWhen you are online in Telegram
Session durationHow long and how often you use Telegram
Traffic volumeRoughly how many messages/media you receive

For most users, this is unpleasant but not critical. However, if you are in a country with an authoritarian regime and the authorities get access to proxy logs — your Telegram activity will be documented.

Risk 3: Instability and Overcrowding

Free public proxies are often set up on the cheapest VPS. When such a proxy is published in a large Telegram channel, thousands of users connect to it.

Consequences:

  • Slow media loading and message delays
  • Regular connection drops
  • Complete unavailability during peak hours

Providers allocate a specific bandwidth to each VPS. When 10,000 users share a 1 Gbps channel, everyone gets ~100 Kbps.

Risk 4: Legal and Jurisdictional Risks

A less obvious but important risk. Some public MTProxy servers are located in countries with aggressive internet surveillance laws. The operator may be required to provide data to local authorities upon request.

This does not mean the content of your messages will be known — MTProxy does not see it. But your metadata (IP, activity time) might be handed over.

Another point: in some countries, simply using a proxy to bypass blocks is technically illegal. Connecting through someone else's proxy doesn't create additional risks compared to a VPN, but it is worth considering.

Risk 5: Intentionally Malicious Proxies

An extreme scenario, but it exists. Although MTProxy cannot decrypt the content of MTProto messages, connection-level attacks are theoretically possible:

  • SSL stripping for unprotected connections (not MTProto, but other connections going through the same network)
  • Traffic analysis to profile user activity
  • Injections into unencrypted traffic (if you visit an HTTP page, though this is not Telegram-specific)

These attacks are not trivial and require specific conditions, but they are possible in the context of targeted surveillance.

How to Mitigate Risks When Using Public Proxies

If you still need a public proxy, here is how to minimize the risks:

  1. Use verified aggregators, not random links. MTProxyHub checks node availability every 60 seconds.

  2. Prefer proxies with Fake TLS (secret starting with ee). This is not protection against the operator's actions, but a sign of a more competent setup.

  3. Check the server's geographywhois IP will show the country and provider. Avoid servers in countries with strict internet laws.

  4. Do not use a single proxy permanently. Rotation reduces the amount of metadata available to one operator.

  5. Use Secret Chats for important conversations — they use E2E encryption with keys only on your devices. The proxy does not affect their security.

When It Makes Sense to Set Up Your Own Proxy

Your own MTProxy takes 30 minutes and $3–5/month:

FAQ

Can the operator read my messages? No. MTProxy has no access to the content — Telegram encrypts the data before transmission. But the operator sees the metadata: your IP and activity timings.

How serious is the risk of spam channels? The operator can change the Promoted Channel at any time. There are no technical limitations — only reputational ones.

Is MTProxyHub safe? We aggregate proxies from verified sources and update the list every 60 seconds. But we do not control specific servers.

How can I find out who owns a proxy? whois <IP> will show the provider and country. You cannot find the owner's identity without their consent.
